The entire Preserve is eleven miles long, one-third of a mile wide and is over 3, acres of intermingled wetland and upland. The Slough catches and slowly filters rainwater on its way towards Estero Bay. Animals adapted to life in wetlands, like alligators, turtles, otters, and wading birds, live at the Slough year-round.
Additionally, many types of migratory birds use the Slough as a rest stop and feeding area. The preserve contains a 1. Picnic tables are available in the parking area and around the butterfly garden. Lee County Annual Parking Stickers are accepted. Guided Walks Join an interpretive naturalist on a minute walk along the boardwalk and learn about the history of the Slough and the plants and wildlife that call it 'home'. Registration opens 30 minutes prior to guided walk at the Trail Host Station.
Registration is NOT taken by phone or in the Interpretive center. Free with paid parking. Limit 10 people per guide. It houses displays and interactive exhibits that provide an introduction to the wonders of the Slough. All proceeds from the shop are used for the Friends mission to preserve, protect and promote the Slough and for use in providing exhibits and programs as needed by staff and volunteers. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10 am to 4 pm Closed on holidays.
