The Ohio State University. The film examines the Chernobyl disaster that took place in Pripyat, Ukraine in It contains many interviews with people who were alive during the disaster, as well as others who are known as Chernobyl stalkers. These stalkers sneak into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, which is also known as the Dead Zone, which is extremely radioactive. They also avoid any guards around the zone, as sneaking into this zone is illegal.
Lee also describes how Pripyat has changed since the disaster and its current state. Today, Pripyat is a ghost town; however, animals and vegetation have started to come back to the area. The wildlife in this area also poses a threat to the Chernobyl stalkers, since the stalkers must get through the forests surrounding the area before they can enter the Dead Zone. Lee talked about why she was interested in the topic of the Chernobyl disaster, what the intent of the film was, and the state of the site today.
The film and discussion were very eye-opening and gave me a deeper understanding of the disaster itself and its effects. Taste of OSU is an annual event that showcases cultures from all around the world through different performances and cuisine. Many of the international clubs on campus take part in the event, and it is very highly-attended. I had attended the event last year, but worked as a volunteer.
This year, I was able to watch more of the performances and try a wider variety of foods. We started the evening by buying our tickets, and then we headed out to see what different cultures and cuisines were on the first floor. We ended the night by watching some of the performances from many of the Korean pop groups as well as from Irish and Chinese groups. I find this event really fun to go to every year, since I am able to talk with people I know from the different organizations around campus, and I am able to take part in a large variety of cultures.
I hope I will be able to attend next year! I am also a part of the STEP Program, so the expo was helpful to see different potential projects that I could pursue.
