In Yekepa Nimba County, global steel giant ArcelorMittal is constructing a modern concentrator to add impetus to the quality of ore shipped from Liberia. ArcelorMittal Liberia is building this high-grade concentrate, which requires approximately 25 million tons annually of raw ore to produce 15 million tons of concentrated product that will add quality to Liberian export ore.
The company said the new investment in a concentrator is a commitment to mining in a sustainable manner and remains a long-term partnership with its communities, the government, and the people of Liberia. In the construction phase alone, the company has hired local contractors who have amassed a workforce of up to people. Our reporter who visited the construction site near Yekepa in Nimba county saw dozens of men and women at work and reported that the ore concentrator is moving fast towards completion.
According to the reporter, many of the local contractors working on the plant are Liberians acquiring new skills and technology that ArcelorMittal has imported into the country. Late last year, ArcelorMittal announced that its phase 2 expansion project has crested about jobs with more expected this year. The Phase Two expansion will see the Belgium headquartered firm invest millions of dollars in Liberian infrastructure that includes rail and port facilities that could enable the government to generate additional revenue.
