A detailed four-page questionnaire was mailed with a cover letter to programs during November Of the responding programs, many provide immediate attention to victims and witnesses by means of witness notification of upcoming hearings or trial dates; court advocacy, transportation, and escort services; and referral to community agencies.
The most frequently provided services for crime victims who contact a victim assistance program are court advocacy and information; court escort; public education; referral to health, mental health, or social service agencies; and assistance in completing victim compensation applications.
The services least often provided are crisis intervention in the home, emergency funds for destitute victims, child care for parents appearing in court, and repair or replacement of broken door locks.
