We have been here before, we have seen that before and when we can revisit pieces of cinema like Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream or Joachim Trier's Oslo, August 31st you tend to wonder if it's even necessary to dip your toes into a new body of water that has not only been charted but done so with excellence. Despite this, there is a place for the new film Animals by Collin Schiffli. It's narrative isn't inventive nor does it really carry any memorable heft with it, but its performances are worth the price of admission alone.
David Dastmalchian who also wroteβ¦. Collin Schiffli clearly has a particular style of filmmaking, one that mostly focuses on the unfortunate and often desperate lives of poor individuals. I honestly think he nails it. The style of his films are great, some of the substance seems to be lacking just based on his only two feature films. The performances are great, and I really liked the ending.
Pretty standard junkie lovers drama follows usual tropes but features very strong performances and some neat sequences, particularly in the first act. Review by Andrew A. Animals is It's a masterpiece. This haunting film looks at addiction in an unadulterated way.
