She is currently married to Alex Volkov , and they have two children, Niko and Sofia. Ava is the youngest daughter of Michael and Wendy Chen and has a brother named Josh.
When she was a child, her parents decided to divorce, which led to a legal battle for custody of the children. Michael accused Wendy of having mental problems and that she supposedly tried to drown Ava. Her mother was later found dead from an overdose.
Ava grew up with a fear of water and forgotten memories of her childhood, but despite this, she is shown to be an optimistic and happy person. Ava has three best friends who are like sisters to her: Bridget , Jules , and Stella. In college she shared an apartment with Jules.
At that time her brother Josh decided to travel to Central America and asked his best friend, Alex , to take care of Ava while he was away.
