The shortage is particularly acute for certain subject areas and in some geographic locations. It is especially severe in schools with high shares of students of color or students from low-income families. The shortage is not a function of an inadequate number of qualified teachers in the U.
Simply, there are too few qualified teachers willing to work at current compensation levels given the increasingly stressful environment facing teachers. Why it matters: A shortage of teachers harms students, teachers, and the public education system as a whole.
What we can do about it: To end the teacher shortage, we must address the two most pressing reasons for the shortage: the long-standing decline in the pay of teachers relative to other workers with a college degree and the high and increasing levels of stress public school teachers face.
For more than a decade, academics and education policy experts have raised concerns about a widespread shortage of teachers in the United States. In this report, we use data from a wide range of sources to document the size and scope of the teacher shortage.
